Located just four miles northwest of downtown Houston is the neighborhood known as The Heights. It’s called that because it sits almost 23 feet higher than downtown. This once made it a popular street car suburb because there were fewer mosquitos here than down hill in Houston proper. It became a neighborhood for wealthy people who wanted to take advantage of the elevation for practical and aesthetic reasons.
From these beginnings as an exclusive neighborhood, The Heights went through a few rough patch after World War II. Today it’s in the middle of an impressive comeback. It’s becoming an attractive community with a wide variety of styles for homes and a blend of retail and restaurants in the area. We visit this part of Houston regularly to help people with their air conditioning and heating needs.
Like a number of older neighborhoods in the Greater Houston area, The Heights has been undergoing a change in the people who live in the neighborhood. Young people and their families are attracted to its relaxed vibe, quaint shops, well groomed parks, and historical background. Over 100 of the buildings in the area are on the National Register of Historic Places, many are being renovated and repurposed for residential and commercial use. There are a few places along White Oak to have a cocktail or enjoy a dinner out. Over on Studemont there are antique shops and you’ll see the “You are My Sunshine” Mural on Rutland between 19th and 20th. Love Park and Community Center has a number of facilities for athletic activities and community events.
The Heights area hosts a couple of street festivals that include the “White Linen Nights” in August and December’s “Lights in the Heights.” The “White Linen Nights” has become so popular that they have to charge tickets to pay for the services and infrastructure that goes into managing a popular event, but even at $10 per ticket, it’s worth it for the music, food, and art vendors. When the weather cools down in December the locals love to put up Christmas lights and have a gathering before taking a drive through one of the best residential light displays along Highland and Omar streets, between Studewood and Florence.
